Where fancy fonts work on Instagram (and where they quietly fail)

Instagram has three separate text fields and they do not behave the same way. Your bio caps at 150 characters and is the safest place for styled fonts. Your name field (the bold line under your photo, capped at 30 characters) also accepts most styles and is searchable, so a styled name can hurt discoverability. Captions render fancy text fine but Instagram strips formatting from some pasted text, so always paste into the caption box and check the preview before posting. The username (the @handle) only allows letters, numbers, periods, and underscores. Unicode fonts will not save there at all.

On counting: every styled character is still one character against the 150 limit, since each glyph is a single Unicode code point. Bold and italic letters cost the same as plain ones. Decorative symbols, hearts, and corner brackets each eat a slot too, so a heavily decorated bio fills up faster than it looks.

Building a bio that reads cleanly at small sizes

Bios display tiny on phones, which matters when picking a style. Some families render thin and break legibility at that scale. Test before committing, but in general:

• Mathematical bold and bold-italic hold up best small. They are the most widely supported families and almost never show up as empty boxes.
• Serif (fraktur and double-struck) look striking but get hard to read for full sentences. Use them for a single word, like a name or tagline, not a whole bio.
• Cursive/script is pretty but the lowercase loops blur at small sizes. Keep it short.
• Tiny/superscript and upside-down text are gimmicky and inconsistent across Android versions. Skip them in a bio you actually care about.

For scannability, give each line one job. Instagram preserves line breaks in the bio, so structure it: line one is who you are, line two is what you offer, line three is a call to action pointing at your link. Lead each line with a small symbol (a dot, arrow, or sparkle from our symbol keyboard) so the eye catches the start of each line. Styling only the keywords, not every word, reads far better than an all-fancy block, which feels cluttered and slows people down.

Two honest cautions. Heavily styled text is invisible to screen readers and can be flagged as spammy, so do not bury essential info in it. And if a friend views your profile and sees boxes instead of letters, their device lacks that font. The classic bold and italic styles are the reliable choice there.
